HOW LEVERS WORK A lever, like a see-saw or old-fashioned scale, has four parts: a fulcrum, the load, the effort, and the lever itself. The stiff material, like the part of the see-saw you would sit on, is the lever itself. The fulcrum is what the lever pivots or balances on. The load is the weight, and the effort is the applied force.
